Running for those who can't: Wings For Life World Run / Corriendo por los que no pueden: Wings For Life World Run

Hello everyone, this time I will write about one of the latest adventures I had a few months ago in Cancun, but firstly I am going to explain about what is Wings for Life World Run.

Wings for Life is a not-profit foundation established in Austria in 2004 whose mission is to find a cure for spinal cord injury, so that, in order to raising funds Wings for Life created an entirely new type of event never before seen on any other sporting field. That event is Wings for Life World Run a truly global adventure involving athletes from 34 locations, participating in one race, in which runners of all levels, from first-timers to professional athletes, will run at the very same time all over the world for those who can’t.

Why is Wings for Life World Run different from other events of this kind?.

Well, firstly, there are no finish line waiting for you, in this occasion, the finish line will chase you through out the course, that means you have to run until you get caught by "The Catcher Car". In short, you know where you start, but you don't know where you will finish.

Other important aspect about running Wings for Life World Run is that you will not only be participating in a different global sporting event but you will also be helping to find a cure for debilitating spinal cord injury.

How does it works?

The event starts at 10:00 UTC simultaneously all over the world, that means some will run their race in the hot weather of the afternoon or even in the cold and dark night of the early morning or will enjoy the sunset while the day turns into a bed of stars. Meanwhile, half an hour later, The Catcher Cars will start up its engines in order to chase for the runners at a constant pace and accelerating it's speed based on a rigid global timetable, so that, when The Catcher Car overtakes a runner its race is over and is time to catch the shuttle back to the starting point.

Is there a reward?

For each location there will be a male and female winner who will receive an invitation to participate on any of the 34 courses they like for the next wings for life world run. But the world winners farther of being crowned as The Global Champions they will receive a round trip around the world filled with unbelievable experiences.

Here is a video explaining how does it works.

Now that you have a clear idea about Wings for Life World Run I will continue with my tale.

For Mexico this event was set in Cancun on May the 5th of 2014, so that, my wife and I took advantage of the labour day holidays to travel there from April 30 to May 5, but unfortunately due to unknown situations we arrived later to the airport losing our flight. Thus, we needed to find the soonest flight to Cancun, then we asked in Volaris, VivaAerobus, Aeromexico and Interjet being the latest one the cheapest and soonest we could get, it was scheduled for Friday night and then our journey begun..

We got our tickets to Cancun and now had to call Best Day so as to cancel our booking at the hotel and the car we hired, never did we think how tough that would be.

When calling Best Day our travel agent warned us about the penalisations due to booking cancellation arguing that hotels and car rental companies usually charges one day of usage. Anyway that day was already lost. So, we proceeded with cancellation and then our agent offered us booking on another hotel using the remaining money from the first reservation, so that we accepted his offer.

Looking for options to stay at Cancun our travel agent was when suddenly he found a better place than we had booked before for no extra charge, then we were done with that and could breathe calmly at last.

It was Friday morning and we were packing our stuff inside our baggage and getting ready to, at last, travel to Cancun and this time we will arrive to the airport on time. Our flight that was scheduled to take-off at 20:20 hrs., so, we only needed to wait until 18:00 hrs. in order to commute to the Airport and wait to get on the plane.

At 18:00 hrs we were leaving home to reach our flight at the Airport, thus, our commute was fast and calmly and could be on time to register our luggage and have something for dinner.

The time to board our plane was pretty close and we were almost done with our dinner, so that, we pay the bill and then walked through the security checkpoint looking for the boarding gate described on our flight tickets.

Approaching to the boarding gate we were when suddenly saw a crowd of angry people yelling to a Volaris' Assistant, apparently our flight was out of schedule.

-"That is great, Why it did not happen this the Wednesday?", I mumbled.

Fortunately we did not waited for hours, our flight arrived just 20 minutes out of schedule and at last we were on way to Cancun.

We arrived roughly at 23:00 hrs. at Cancun's International Airport and our transportation was waiting to take us to our hotel. We booked at "El Gran Oasis" a big and bustling all inclusive resort where a quite amiable bell boy attended us and carried our luggage to the front desk where we registered.

At last we were in Cancún.

I woke up quite early in the morning so as to feel Cancun's weather and humidity. It was still dark and even you can see the moon and the stars, surprisingly there were public transportation running at that time. So, I did some dynamic stretching and then started an easy running along Kukulcan's Boulevard.

In the beginning I felt good but a few kilometres later while increasing my pace, a sensation of heat felt through my body caused by Cancun's humidity and a 23°c temperature, so, I continue with my morning training by roughly 8 kilometres to finalise the last 2 over the white sands of Cancun's beaches, feeling the soft wind pampering my skin and the warm water of the sea desperately trying to play with my toes on every stride of my legs. So, I continue running along the beach, there were no darkness anymore and the sun was trying to raise from his watered bed and shine for one more day.

I ended up with my workout and then returned to my room to have breakfast with my wife and then pick-up the runner's kit for tomorrow's competition, so, after breakfast we took a bus to commute to "B2B Hotel", where runner's kits were delivered. But before we went to "La Isla" Shopping Centre to withdraw some money from the cashpoint.

After a few minutes of commuting, we were at "B2B Hotel", there were few people and so that, runner's kit delivery was quiet and fast. Runners kit contained a head band, my runner number attached with it's BIB, some leaflets with information regarding to the competition and a shirt that I got customised with my name, then we returned to the hotel where we spent almost all day at the beach.

In the afternoon we had lunch at hotel's italian restaurant where there were lots of people waiting due to service was quite slow, so that we only could eat some pieces of pizza, so that, we rather return later so as to have dinner. By the meantime, we went to the closest convenience store to buy some oat, a few apples, potato chips and bottled water and then returned to the hotel.

On the way, we saw lots of classic cars parked on the hotel's front garden, it was The Riviera Maya Rally that travels along Yucatan shores, we shoot some pictures and continued on the way to our room.

After a few minutes, we had dinner at the Hotel's Italian Restaurant, where we ordered calzone, lasagne and linguine with tuna puttanesca. While we were waiting, my wife asked me where she will wait for me tomorrow. I replied that would be better if she waits at the bus stop located in front of the hotel over Kukulcan Blvd around 06:20 hrs. because at that time roughly I will be passing in front of the hotel.

-"Great!!, I will be cheering you up", my wife joyfully said.

We ate our dinner and returned to our room to set up the stuff I will be using for tomorrow. I attached my racing number to my tank and put it aside my racing gear, then prepare my breakfast, some gu chomps and finally we go to sleep, as always, I could not sleep because of the excitement, but in some minutes I could.

It was 2:30 am when the phone's alarm rang, so, I woke up and took a shower. The run was scheduled to start at 5:00 am and our hotel was quite far from the starting point, so that, I had to leave the room at least at 3:00 am to be on time and do a warm up before the race. Thus, I wore my running gear, had my breakfast, said goodbye to my wife and leave our hotel room to pick up a bus to the city centre. Thus, I was waiting on the bus stop placed in front of the hotel, when finally one arrived, so I aboard it and commuted for about an hour to the bus stop settled close to Bonampak Av. where I dropped off and walked to Tajamar Pier looking for the starting line. In the mean time, I drank up my energetic potion to complement my juicy apple.

After a few minutes of walking I could see at last the starting line, there were lots of people and faraway in the distance the catcher cars shining due to the street lamps.

I left my rucksack with cloakroom attendant and prepared myself for the run warming up and doing some sprints.

-"All to the starting line, the race is almost starting" a man said.

So, I proceeded to join with my assigned group at the starting line, I was excited because this race will be my fastest long distance run ever and lots of athletes around the globe will be running with us.

The catcher cars were aside to the starting line and meanwhile we were on a runner's party. Then, the most awaited moment happened, the final countdown to success began..

10, 9, 8....

All were excited..
7, 6, 5...
Our hearts were beating hard while waiting for the battle...
4,3,2...
Our hands were over our watches waiting for the last seconds..
2,1,0..
And the race started.

All of us were passing the catcher cars and as consequence our BIB's were activated, so that, we were officially running on Wings For Life World Run.

At 5:00 am in the morning was still dark in Cancun and the only visible lights were from the street lights, some runners with headband lamps and few ones wearing neon lights as wristbands. The weather was warm but due to humidity it feels quite hot, I started running with a moderate pace that let me overtake lots of people in the first kilometre.

Some meters ahead there were a group of 3 runners that were running almost at my pace, so I joined and stayed with them for a few minutes before overtake them, obviously they did not want to stay behind me, so they increased their pace so as to try to stay with me but some kilometres later they simply desisted.

At 5:30 am I have ran 7 kilometres already and surely the catcher cars had started their engines in order to catch us and so that, the real struggle has started.

I have just passed kilometre 9 when I saw the leading woman followed by a guy on a bicycle who was taking care of her, I was running faster than she and then I tried to overtake her but she speed up her pace starting with a pretty interesting battle. Never did she realised that I was not speeding up my pace, so, I just stayed behind, pretty close, waiting for the right moment to let her back. So, almost at kilometre 10 there was a little curvy slope and I took advantage of that in order to overtake her. Then, we were approaching to that slope when happened what I expected, she slowed down, thus I just increased the speed so as to maintain my pace and take the fast lane through the curve, so I passed her, obviously she tried to stay with me but she could not.

So, I passed kilometre 10 where some bars, restaurants, shopping malls, brand stores and so on are placed. There were lots of young and not young fellas pretty drunk but cheering us.

A few kilometres ahead at kilometre 12 or so, in front of me there were 3 guys and we were approaching to another curvy slope where a guy with a bicycle was cheering us and alerted us...

- "Hey!!"
- "You are the 9th"
- "You the 10th"
- "You 11th and you 12th", wow I told to my self
- "You got the 12th, that means I have to overtake just 8".

Yes, just 8 because I was passing the 3 runners in front of me and I could see a 4th ahead, so I continue running looking to pass as many competitors as I can.

At this point, humidity was not a problem for me neither heat because each 2 kilometres there was an aid station with water and every 5 with gatorade. Since kilometre 9 I started eating GU Chomps every 4 kilometres.

I felt happy due to I was running Wings For Life, the race I was waiting for since almost a year ago and stride by stride I was meeting my goal to run 32 kilometres for those who can't.

Kilometre 14. At this time I have just passed 2 more competitors, I was almost arriving to kilometre 18, where my wife was waiting for me to cheer me on.

The sight was astonishing. If I turn my head right there was The Nichupè Lagoon, turning it left was possible to look at the beach and the sea while the dawn light was colouring the skies with that rose-pink wake.

Kilometre 16. One more runner bitting my dust and there were few competitors ahead I could enumerate 4 leading the race.

-"Maybe I could win", I told to myself, this is a endurance race.

Kilometre 18. I was almost arriving to our hotel, I could see the huge hotel's announcement and the main tower closer on every stride, I looked at my Garmin an it was 6:13 in the morning, earlier than expected.

-"I hope my wife could wait for me", I thought.

So, I continue running and I could see the bus stop but some trees do not let me see if my wife was waiting for me and I felt pretty sad, but a few meters ahead I could see my wife waiting for me, so, we established visual contact and then took out her iPad to shot some pictures...

-"You are doing great JC, come on, you are quite close to the leader", my wife cheered pretty excited.

I just turned my head to her and raised my left hand to hail her and then continue with the competition.

Half Marathon: After 1 hour and 42 minutes I managed myself to run for 21.097 kilometres and I felt really good, I was running aside one guy whose goal was run until that distance so, when we look at the tapestry indicating we were almost completing 21 kilometres it was time to say goodbye, so, I continue running.

Kilometre 24: Faraway in the distance I could see another runner wearing a yellow tank, he was running at least with the same pace as me, so I continue running in order to reach him.

We were passing by Doplhins Beach and there were lots of people cheering us, the view of the sea at that spot was marvellous, simply gorgeous. At this point there were no sign of the catcher car.

Kilometre 26: We were running throughout the last curvy road on Kukulcán Blvd. and the following 2 kilometres before 307 motorway (Cancún-Chetumal motorway) is a long straight road.

Some meters ahead, there was the same guy with the yellow tank and also other 4, surely, I was catching up the leading competitors.

At this point of the race I was feeling a bit tired and some little wells distributed along the last part of Kukulcan's were not helping indeed.

- "Come on!, take a little bath, water seems to be fresh, is all you need...", my mind yelled.

But no, I did not fall in temptation despite being soaked on sweat, in fact my toes were pretty wet too, on each stride I could hear a squeezing sound similar to walk in watered sandals.

Kilometre 28: I was closer than further from my goal, no more than 4 kilometres, when suddenly a guy riding a bike appeared from my left side, he was part of the security crew of the race.

-"Be aware, the catcher car is coming closer", he alerted.

So, I did what I have to do, just run and try to catch up the next competitor.

Some meters after, I noticed that the runner whose tank was yellow hit the wall, so that, I could take advantage of the situation and overrun him so as to get a better position in the race. Thus, I simply did a little increase on my pace and let him biting my dust, he just cheered me.

-"Come on you can do it!!", he yelled.

Kilometre 30: I was taking the right motorway junction to join Cancún-Chetumal motorway, actually that junction is pretty steep, so that I had to decrease my pace in order to stay in the race and meet my goal that was just 2 kilometres away from me.

Kilometre 32: At this point of the race, I was already running throughout Cancún-Chetumal motorway and just a few meters under my goal, at the other side of the motorway I could see the competition leader surrounded by motorcycles and police cars, he was 3 kilometres over me.

Suddenly, something pretty rare to me started to happen. Without any sign, I started to feel really confused. I was outrunning my goal and the catcher car was out of my sight, so, I was trying to continue running, but my legs felt heavy and my mind was assuming that the competition was over because I could hear pretty loud on my head...

- "You did it, you completed your goal", once and again.
- "Am I hitting the wall?", I thought.
- "I must continue until the catcher car overtakes me", I told to myself
- "You did it come on, you meet your goal", my mind reminded me.
- "Why you are doing this, you insane?", my mind argued me

I was on an internal struggle against my subconscious whom unfortunately for me was getting victorious annihilating my positive state of mind.

- "Hey you!!, leave me alone, here I command and you just stick to my orders", I replied.

So that, I continue running undisturbed to the next aid station and then to the following junction in order to reach the other side of the motorway.

Kilometre 33: At last, on the other side of the motorway I could see it, the catcher car shinning under the morning sun beams and moving at a steady speed of 16 km/hr, so that, I continue running doing the best I could until the catcher car overtakes me.

Kilometre 35: I was still in the race and the most horrendous thing for me in that moment was just a few meters behind and ready to catch me.

Most of people are afraid of zombies or men eater giant robots or maybe Godzilla or the creepy boogyman. But in my case, that spooky thing was "The Catcher Car", roaring like a starving lion looking for fresh raw meat and the closest piece of fresh meat was, unfortunately, me.

So, I did my last sprint so as to keep it on my back.

I ran for 100 mts as fast as I could and the Catcher Car was still approaching to me, then I realised that will not be easy to let it behind, but at least catching me will not be easy either, thus I continue running...

200 mts: The Catcher car was smelling my sweat.

300 mts: The Catcher car was almost grabbing my tank.

500 mts: The Catcher Car was looking at me with an angry face.

700 mts: I can hear clearly The Catcher Car's engine.

800 mts: I can see The Catcher Car's bonnet aside of me.

900 mts: Claps and cheers was the only I could hear coming from Red Bull's Crew who was traveling inside The Catcher Car and then the sound of it's horn loudly and very clear to let me know that my race was over...

- "Congratulations!!!, you performed pretty good", one of the race referees congratulated.

I just raised my hands in sign of gratitude while jogging to the next aid station that was just a few meters from me in order to have some refreshers and wait for the shuttle to B2B Hotel.

After having some beverages I realised that I managed to run 3 kilometres over my goal for a total of 35 km completed in roughly 2:40 hrs., my best personal record until that moment.

Minutes later, one of the staff guys arrived and informed me that the shuttles were jammed in a bottle neck on the motorway, so, he offered me a free ride on taxi to the B2B Hotel, so, I accepted the lift.

Arriving to the hotel I noticed that there was a party, all the runners who were caught early by the catcher car were enjoying the live transmission of the race, so I moved inside the building where I received my medal and my recovery kit, then I sat on the floor to perform my regular stretches.

After a few minutes, I moved to my hotel where my wife was waiting for me to have breakfast and chat about my latest adventure.

Here is another video summarizing Mexico's run.

Wings For Life Worls Run 2014 Highlights

Mientras esperábamos, mi esposa me preguntó dónde me esperaría mañana.

2,1,0 ..

- "¡¡Oye!!"

-"¡Adelante!, tú puedes hacerlo", me gritó.

200 mts: El Catcher Car estaba podía oler mi sudor.

300 mts: El Catcher Car estaba casi agarrando mi playera.
